The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and the City of Cornwall will start seasonal road weight limits on March 9, 2026. These rules, often called half-load restrictions, help protect local roads in Cornwall, Ontario, from damage during the spring thaw.
Most regional and municipal roads will be restricted to a maximum weight of five tonnes per axle. This means truck drivers, farmers, and businesses may need to use different routes or carry smaller loads until the restrictions end in early May.
Some major routes will stay open for full loads, including County Roads 31, 34, 43, 46, and parts of County Road 2. Essential services such as garbage collection and milk trucks are also not affected by these weight rules.
Enforcement will begin as soon as road signs are posted in the area. The limits are necessary because melting ice can weaken the ground under the pavement, making the roads more likely to break under the weight of heavy trucks.
