Residents in Dauphin, Manitoba, are facing heavy snow and slippery roads as a winter storm is expected to drop up to 20 centimetres of snow by Wednesday night. The weather warning from Environment Canada covers the entire Rural Municipality of Dauphin, as well as the communities of Sifton and Valley River, for March 24 and March 25, 2026.
Weather observers at the Dauphin Airport reported light snow on Wednesday morning with temperatures sitting at -14.3 degrees Celsius. With the wind blowing from the north-east, the wind chill has made it feel as cold as -24 for those heading outdoors. Forecasters expect the heaviest snow to fall throughout Wednesday, which could make it very difficult to walk or drive safely.
Because of the poor conditions, the Mountain View School Division may cancel rural bus routes, as the division has a history of stopping service during major winter storms. To help keep the roads open, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure has crews stationed at dozens of maintenance yards to operate hundreds of snow plows and graders across the province.
Officials are asking people to consider staying home and postponing any travel that is not necessary until the storm passes. Residents should also make sure they have emergency supplies like flashlights, batteries, and extra water ready. Manitoba Hydro warns that severe winter weather can sometimes cause power outages that last for several hours or even a full day.
