Northern Health is moving into the final planning stage for the biggest hospital move in Dawson Creek, B.C., as it prepares to shift patients from the old Dawson Creek and District Hospital to the new one.
The health authority says a Patient Transfer Committee will be formed in May 2026 to help manage the changeover. Its job will include setting move-day rules, planning for care to continue during the transfer, and mapping out patient transport routes.
Northern Health has also brought in Health Care Relocations, which says it has completed more than 500 hospital relocations around the world since 1993. The company is part of the planning work as the hospital move gets closer.
Construction on the new hospital is now about 92% complete, and the substantial completion date has been moved up to September 29, 2026, from November 30, 2026. The $590 million project is expected to be more than 50% larger than the current hospital and will include 70 beds, a larger emergency department and expanded mental health services.
Northern Health says Opening Day is expected in early 2027, although the exact date has not yet been confirmed. The current hospital, which was built in 1960, will be demolished after the move is finished.
