Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) published a feature on February 10, 2026, describing how its specialized teams support radiological emergency response at Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) and beyond. The piece outlines the roles of CNL’s Health Sciences and Radiobiology teams based at the Chalk River/Deep River site and how they contribute technical monitoring, biodosimetry and dose-assessment capabilities during a radiological incident.
CNL says it uses a mobile Emergency Monitoring and Dispersal Area (EMDA) system for field radiological detection and management. The EMDA is a mobile capability that can be deployed from the Chalk River site to other locations as needed to provide rapid response and monitoring support. Residents near CRL are also covered by a network of eight outdoor alarm sirens located in the Town of Deep River and Laurentian Hills; CNL notes these community alarms are routinely tested.
Local emergency response is coordinated with municipal partners under a long-standing Fire Protection Services Agreement between CNL and the Town of Deep River (original interim and subsequent agreements date to 2017–2018 and have been renewed). Federal regulator the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) conducts independent environmental monitoring and regulatory oversight around the Chalk River site to verify radiological conditions and compliance. CNL’s Radiobiology & Health Branch and radiation protection teams continue to work on-site to provide technical assessment and monitoring of potential risks to human health in coordination with municipal, provincial and federal authorities.
