A local French-language group is hosting weekly drop-in sessions to help people in Elliot Lake, Ontario, practice their speaking skills and meet new neighbours. Organized by RAFO Rive Nord, the conversation sessions take place every Tuesday afternoon to support both native speakers and those learning the language.

The meet-ups are held at the Club des Aînés de l’Étoile d’Or at 3 Mary Walk from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Upcoming sessions take place every Tuesday; the City of Elliot Lake community calendar lists the next session on January 20, 2026. No prior registration is needed for anyone who wants to attend.

Each session features different weekly themes to keep the conversations moving and help residents share stories in a relaxed setting. According to the 2021 Statistics Canada census profile for Elliot Lake, about 13.8% of the local population identifies as Francophone, making these social events an important way to help sustain the culture.

The program is open to people of all ages and fluency levels, including those who grew up speaking French and those who are just starting out. Organizers (RAFO Rive Nord) say the weekly sessions will help build a stronger sense of community for French speakers in the region; the City of Elliot Lake lists the events on its community calendar.
