All schools and Day Care services in Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, are closed today, January 26, 2026, because of a winter storm. The Eskasoni School Board announced the closure early Monday after heavy snow and high winds made local roads dangerous.
The shutdown includes the Eskasoni Ksite’taqnk Day Care and the Eskasoni-to-Cape Breton University commuter bus run. According to Environment Canada forecasts and regional alerts for Cape Breton, the storm has caused poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions across the region.
Local officials from Eskasoni First Nation used social media and the community radio station to notify families about the closures at around 6:00 a.m. AST. School officials say students do not need to switch to remote learning for this one-day closure.
The board, which works with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey on local education matters, will provide an update by 6:00 p.m. AST this evening regarding classes for Tuesday. The decision to close was made to keep students, staff, and bus drivers safe during the peak of the winter weather.
Parents and students are encouraged to check the Eskasoni School Board’s official channels (including its Facebook page) this evening for more information on when services will resume.
