On January 26, 2026, a child in Estevan, Saskatchewan, sustained significant injuries after being bitten by a dog, the Estevan Police Service said. The incident prompted a local investigation as officers work to determine exactly what happened.

The Estevan Police Service confirmed it received a complaint about the bite and said “statements have been obtained” as the matter remains under investigation. Officers have not publicly disclosed the specific breed of the dog or the identity of its owner.

Police described the injuries as “significant.” It has not been publicly disclosed what medical treatment the child received. The investigation will also inform whether the owner could face penalties under the city’s Animal Control Bylaw (2005-1709), which is enforced by City bylaw/animal services and sets rules meant to protect people and ensure animals are controlled humanely.

The Estevan Board of Police Commissioners, which oversees local policing, may face questions about public safety and the enforcement of animal-control rules following the incident. While overall calls for service to the Estevan Police Service were down in 2025, officers continue to prioritize responses to reports involving physical harm.

At this time, it has not been confirmed whether the dog has been seized or quarantined, nor whether municipal fines or criminal charges will be pursued. Police say they are continuing to interview neighbours, canvass the area and review evidence as they complete their report.
