The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP are warning the community in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, after responding to six separate calls involving teenagers with imitation firearms in a single week. These incidents, reported in the days leading up to February 18, 2026, are linked to a social media challenge where youth shoot airsoft or gel guns at others. While no serious injuries were reported, police describe the trend as disturbing for the community.

On February 20, 2026, a 17-year-old male was arrested in connection with these shootings. He now faces five criminal charges, including two counts of assault with a weapon and using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence. A school resource officer helped police with the investigation and the arrest.

Police say these imitation weapons often look exactly like real guns, which makes them very dangerous when used in public spaces. This concern is high following a tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on February 11, 2026, which resulted in nine deaths. Because the imitation guns look so real, they create a high risk for the youth involved and for the officers who respond to the calls.

While airsoft guns are not regulated like real firearms, police say that firing them in public is still illegal and can cause serious harm. Parents are being asked to talk to their children about the legal and physical dangers of these social media challenges. Residents who see any suspicious activity are encouraged to report it to the RCMP immediately.
