The Gananoque & District Humane Society (GDHS) issued an urgent appeal in late January/early February 2025 asking the community for wet cat food donations to help feed the animals currently in its care. The shelter, at 85 County Road 32 (85 Highway 32, RR #1), Gananoque, Ontario K7G 2V3, said it is running low on specific brands, including Friskies and Fancy Feast, during the winter feeding surge.

GDHS is primarily a volunteer-run, no-kill shelter — animals are not euthanized except in cases of extreme medical necessity — and it relies heavily on community support. The organization does not receive government funding for its day-to-day operations and depends on donations from local residents to provide food and supplies.

In addition to canned wet cat food, the shelter listed cleaning and household items it needs, including paper towels, laundry detergent, original blue Dawn dish soap, liquid hand soap, bleach, and non-clumping cat litter.

People can drop off physical items at the shelter (porch/front-door drop-offs are commonly accepted) or make financial donations through CanadaHelps. The society serves Gananoque and Ward 1 of the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands (TLTI).
