Residents and visitors gathered at North Pond in Gimli, Manitoba, on February 15, 2026, for a Pike Ice Fishing Derby. The event, which ran from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, provided a low-cost outdoor activity for families during the Louis Riel Day long weekend.

The Rural Municipality of Gimli supported the tournament as a Platinum-level sponsor for the 2026 season to improve safety. This partnership allowed municipal crews to clear snow for ice roads and ensured that Gimli Fire and Rescue was on standby for any emergencies.

Organizers chose North Pond because its sheltered waters are often safer and more accessible than the open ice on Lake Winnipeg. By focusing on Northern Pike, the derby offered a fun challenge for both experienced anglers and people who are new to the sport.

Local businesses, including tackle shops and restaurants, saw more customers as lake traffic increased throughout the day. The Interlake Tourism Association helped coordinate the event as part of a plan to encourage more winter visits to the community.
