Major winter weather forced the Huron County OPP to close several main roads around Goderich, Ontario, on January 13, 2026. Intense snow squalls and high winds created whiteout conditions that made visibility near zero on many highways.

The closures affected Highway 21 from Goderich north to Amberley and south to Bayfield, as well as Highway 8 between Goderich and Clinton. Local authorities advised people to stay home to prevent cars from getting stranded or ending up in the ditch while the storm was at its worst.

According to Huron County Public Works, police make the final call on when it is safe to reopen a provincial or municipal road. Road crews worked to clear paths for emergency vehicles, but heavy drifting made it difficult to keep the lanes clear for regular traffic until wind speeds dropped.

Constable Craig Soldan with the Huron OPP urged drivers to use caution and carry emergency kits throughout the winter months. Residents can find the latest information on which local roads are open by visiting the Municipal511 website.
