Goderich Minor Hockey is preparing a full day of special events on March 16, 2026, to mark the 75th Young Canada Week in Goderich, Ontario. The celebration falls during the town’s March Break and is being organized in partnership with the Goderich Lions Club to honour one of the country’s oldest youth hockey traditions.
The celebration will take place at the Maitland Recreation Centre (MRC YMCA) and the Goderich Memorial Arena. Goderich Minor Hockey says the dedicated “Celebration Day” is planned to include skills clinics for local players and fundraising activities; organizers say they hope to include exhibition games featuring NHL alumni, subject to confirmation. Goderich Minor Hockey also reports that regular house-league and rep schedules will be paused to allow families and players to participate in the festivities.
This year’s edition is significant: the tournament originated in 1950 and the 2026 event is being presented as the 75th Young Canada Week. The tournament has seen many notable past participants, including Wayne Gretzky, and historically has drawn large numbers of teams to the area (the Lions’ history notes, for example, 100 teams competed in 1967). Recent coverage from CTV News London has noted the scale and energy of the tournament, with many games played across the week.
Organizers are working to bring back the excitement of past years following format changes reported in earlier coverage of the tournament’s post-pandemic return. Residents can expect to see local volunteers running raffle tables and assisting at the arenas throughout the day. Organizers say the event will raise funds for local hockey programs and hospital initiatives in the community.
