The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is inviting people to the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium on January 24, 2026, to make handmade Valentine’s Day cards for local and national veterans. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium. This gathering gives neighbours a chance to show their appreciation for former service members before the cards are sent out across the country.

The Grand Falls-Windsor Recreation & Special Events Department is organizing the workshop. Participants are welcome to bring their own craft kits. Organizers ask that no candy or chocolate be included with the cards, in line with Veterans Affairs Canada guidance.

This local effort is part of the national “Valentines for Vets” program managed by Veterans Affairs Canada. Once finished, cards may be hand-delivered to local veterans or mailed to Veterans Affairs Canada for distribution to veterans in long-term care; local delivery through the Royal Canadian Legion is also a common option for similar events.

High school students may be eligible to earn community service hours for helping at the crafting stations; students should confirm eligibility with their school or the event organizers. The town is hosting the workshop in late January to ensure cards can be collected and mailed ahead of VAC’s February 1 deadline so they arrive by Valentine’s Day.
