Residents in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, are facing extreme cold and incoming snow despite a previous Special Weather Statement being lifted on Monday, January 26, 2026. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) ended the Special Weather Statement for the area that morning but is warning that a dangerous cold snap has arrived.

Morning wind chills are reaching near −28°C. At that level ECCC guidance notes a high risk of frostbite — any exposed skin can freeze in about 10 to 30 minutes — so residents should limit time outdoors and protect exposed extremities.

New snow is expected to begin on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, which could make local roads and the Trans‑Canada Highway slippery. Drivers are encouraged to check 511 Newfoundland and Labrador (511NL) at https://511nl.ca/ for live updates on road conditions and snow clearing before heading out.

Because air temperatures are so low, road salt may not work as effectively as usual: road crews note that salt loses significant effectiveness once air temperatures fall below roughly −10°C to −15°C. This arctic air is substantially colder than the late‑January average low for Grand Falls‑Windsor, which is about −12.7°C.
