The Trans-Canada Highway west of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, reopened by approximately 10:50 a.m. on January 15, 2026, after a two-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer shut down the road in both directions.

The crash happened earlier that morning near the local weigh scales, blocking travel for commuters and commercial trucks between the central and western regions of the island. Officers from the RCMP and NL Department of Transportation and Infrastructure road crews worked to clear the wreckage and ensure the pavement was safe before allowing drivers back onto the road.

While the specific cause of the accident remains under investigation, Environment Canada forecasts and the available incident reports described typical mid-winter conditions in the area at the time. This stretch of highway is a known hotspot for collisions in winter months, where ice and merging heavy-vehicle traffic can make driving more hazardous.

Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP used the incident to remind the public about the provincial Move Over Law, which protects emergency workers on the side of the road. The RCMP advises that drivers who see flashing lights must slow down and, if it is safe to do so, move over to the other lane. According to RCMP NL guidance, a first offence under the Move Over Law carries a fine of $390 and four demerit points.
