On February 17, 2026, the Grande Prairie City Council in Alberta approved a new $80,000 program to help local businesses pay for repairs caused by vandalism. This one-year pilot program is meant to give financial relief to shop owners and organizations facing costs from social disorder. Money for the repairs will come from the council’s strategic initiative fund.

City leaders also gave initial approval for plans to borrow money for two major construction projects. One project is for a new Public Safety Communications Centre to help emergency workers, which is part of the city’s move to its own Grande Prairie Police Service. The second project will fund new drainage systems to better manage stormwater in the Mission Heights neighbourhood.

The city was also recognized as an age-friendly community by the provincial government due to its work to support older residents. During the meeting, Tristan Paragas was appointed to the Youth Advisory Council for the current term. Additionally, Sarah Card provided an update on the upcoming plans for the 2026 Bear Creek Folk Festival.

To help with local social issues, the city changed its rules to add a councillor as a voting member of the Housing and Homelessness Advisory Committee. This change is intended to help the city better coordinate its housing programs and support services for people in need. Residents can expect to see more details on the borrowing plans as they move through the final approval stages in the coming months.
