Grande Prairie City Council officially adopted its new four-year strategic plan during their meeting on March 30, 2026, setting the primary goals that will guide city operations and decision-making through 2029.
The 2026-2029 Strategic Plan is organized around four main priorities: economic opportunity and resilience, community empowerment and livability, infrastructure and financial sustainability, and purposeful leadership and governance. These focus areas are intended to bring stability to the city’s direction as local leaders navigate current economic conditions.
This plan follows the 2022-2025 Strategic Plan, which was approved on May 2, 2022, and focused on quality of life as its overarching goal. The update comes after the October 2025 municipal election, which saw the re-election of Mayor Jackie Clayton. The current council features six incumbents and two newcomers, Jena Flach and Wade Pilat.
To support community needs and service delivery, the city also recently approved its 2026 budget. According to the 2026 Budget, residents will see a total tax increase of 4.34 percent. This figure includes 2.42 percent for municipal operations and 1.92 percent for the Grande Prairie Protective Services levy, which averages out to an increase of about $12.00 per month for the average single-family home.
The city’s planning efforts occur alongside recent economic activity, including $165 million in building permit values recorded in 2025. This figure represents the highest level of housing activity in the area over the last five years, with construction starts in 2025 reaching nearly double the levels seen in 2024. Official results from the 2025 municipal election indicated that 9,568 residents cast ballots, reflecting a voter turnout of 21.7 percent.
