The Grande Prairie Fire Department (GPFD), announced by the City of Grande Prairie, is inviting young women and gender‑diverse youth to apply for a free firefighting program this spring. The three‑day event, Camp F.I.R.E. (Fostering Independence, Resilience and Empowerment), will run April 24–26, 2026, and gives local youth a hands‑on look at careers in emergency services.

Camp F.I.R.E. is open to individuals aged 16 to 20. Participants will receive practical, hands‑on training in fire suppression, search‑and‑rescue operations, and the use of specialized equipment, and will take part in physical drills and teamwork exercises similar to those used by fire crews.

Fire Chief Mark VanWerkhoven told EverythingGP that the camp ‘aims to break down barriers and foster a supportive environment for young women while empowering participants to explore a career in emergency and fire services.’ Active firefighters and officers, including female mentors, will lead training and mentorship sessions at the GPFD training facilities throughout the weekend.

This is the third annual Camp F.I.R.E., first held in 2024. Historically the program has been limited to about 15 participants, and spots typically fill quickly.

The camp is free for attendees. The City of Grande Prairie is covering program costs, and local businesses have historically contributed support (for example, equipment or meals) to help keep the camp at no charge.

Applications opened with the City announcement on January 15, 2026. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2026. Residents interested in attending can find full program details and the application form on the City of Grande Prairie website.
