Grande Prairie City Council signed off on July 14, 2026, on a 10-year, $3.98-million agreement with Axon Public Safety Canada to outfit the Grande Prairie Police Service with modern equipment and software ahead of its full launch this fall. The deal covers body-worn cameras, TASER devices, digital evidence management, drone program software, and in-car video systems for Enforcement Services.
The contract is worth $3,977,479.39 plus tax, but the money isn’t new – the police service already set it aside in its 2026 budget. This is the second major technology pact between the local police and Axon; council approved a Records Management System with the same company in November 2025.
The Axon TASER is the only conducted energy device the province’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services has approved for Alberta police agencies. Along with body cameras, the tools are meant to boost transparency and officer safety as the city prepares for the historic switch from RCMP to a municipal force.
The Grande Prairie Police Service is expected to take over as the city’s police of jurisdiction in October 2026, becoming Alberta’s first new municipal police service since 1956. The transition began with a city council vote in March 2023 and has been supported by nearly $17 million in provincial funding.
Lifecycle support is built into the Axon agreement, meaning equipment updates and maintenance are covered over the full decade. Council’s approval was noted in highlights from the July 14 meeting posted by the City of Grande Prairie.
