The Grande Prairie Public School Division received provincial recognition on May 13, 2026, for its ongoing efforts to involve families in the decision-making process at its 18 schools. The Alberta School Councils’ Association presented the division with the Division School Council Engagement Award to highlight how the school system connects parents with local leadership.
The division was nominated for the honour by the Parkside Montessori and Alexander Forbes Public School councils. This award recognizes the division’s formal network known as the Council of School Councils, which allows parent leaders from every school in the system to communicate directly with school board trustees and senior administration.
In addition to the division award, former superintendent Sandy McDonald received the 2026 Friend of ASCA Award. McDonald served for eight years, during which he focused on building relationships between school councils and the central office, which is located at 10127 120 Avenue in Grande Prairie. James Robinson officially took over the role of superintendent on January 1, 2026, following McDonald’s retirement.
The Grande Prairie Public School Division has served the community since 1911 and currently supports more than 8,800 students. The Alberta School Councils’ Association is a non-profit organization that provides resources to help school councils work effectively and advocates for parents within the education system.
