The County of Grande Prairie Agricultural Service Board met on January 14, 2026, to publicly support a province‑wide push for more funding to fix aging rural roads and bridges in Alberta. The effort, led by the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), builds on the RMA’s Rural Municipal Infrastructure Deficit Project and aims to close a massive rural infrastructure shortfall the RMA estimates at roughly $17 billion (2023) and projected to surpass $25 billion by 2025 without provincial intervention.
Local leaders say current provincial funding is insufficient to cover the rising costs of maintaining the County’s transportation network, which includes more than 3,600 kilometres of paved and gravel roads, sidewalks, trails, bridges and culverts. Without increased provincial support, the cost of replacing bridges and surfacing roads can fall on local property owners through higher taxes.
Residents and farmers report that deteriorating infrastructure often leads to seasonal weight restrictions on local roads that limit movement of heavy grain trucks and farm equipment. Sustained investment in rural roads and bridges would help keep high-load corridors open longer and reduce disruptions to agricultural operations.
The County is managing an interim 2025 budget deficit of about $3.96 million, driven in part by the cost of maintaining an extensive road and bridge network. In the County’s interim budget announcement, the Reeve (as quoted in the County release) said council is focused on balancing residents’ needs with responsible stewardship of public funds while seeking ways to address service levels and asset renewal (County of Grande Prairie interim budget announcement).
RMA’s ‘Closing the Gap’ campaign — launched publicly on Jan. 15, 2026 — is a five‑week public awareness and advocacy effort that highlights the scale of the rural municipal infrastructure deficit and recommends predictable, equitable provincial funding approaches. The Research Dossier states the campaign calls for approximately $1 billion per year in dedicated rural infrastructure funding to help close the gap and stabilize maintenance and renewal of local roads and bridges.
