Grande Prairie Live Theatre is launching a weekly summer improv show called Star Wrek: A Room to Improv Production, starting July 3, 2026, at its downtown venue at 10130 98 Avenue in Grande Prairie, Alberta. The 64th season kickoff runs every Friday through August 28, with shows at 8:00 PM and tickets going for $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Organizers say the episodic improv aims to give residents a fun, affordable night out while showcasing local talent at the 161-seat theatre.
Advance tickets can be secured for $12 through the theatre’s website, with door tickets priced at $15. The show is produced by Room to Improv, a local improv troupe, and is part of the theatre’s summer lineup.
“We deeply rely on our nearly 300 volunteers to help bring community theatre of the highest quality to life,” the theatre states on its website, Grande Prairie Live Theatre. The volunteer-driven organization draws over 14,000 audience members each year and has been a mainstay in the city since 1963, when it was founded as the Grande Prairie Little Theatre Society. Today it operates two venues, including the downtown 161-seat space and a larger 304-seat theatre available for community rentals.
Earlier this month, the theatre hosted an Introduction to Theatre Lighting workshop led by John Rowe, a hands-on session for those interested in backstage skills. The workshop was held June 27-28 and reflects the organization’s ongoing efforts to involve residents in all aspects of production. The theatre also runs the Rising Stars summer drama camp program for youth ages 7 to 17, with local artists writing original plays for each themed week.
Behind the scenes, the theatre recently signed a ten-year partnership with Northwestern Polytechnic to host major musical productions at the 500-seat Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre. While the Star Wrek show stays in the intimate downtown venue, the partnership signals growing opportunities for larger-scale events in the future.
