Peace Wapiti Academy in Grande Prairie will receive two new modular classrooms to help manage growing student enrollment. Alberta Education announced the addition on April 17, 2026, as part of a provincial effort to address space shortages in schools across the province.
The academy currently supports approximately 680 students in grades 9 through 12. With the school operating at 98 per cent of its total capacity, the new classrooms are intended to provide relief for both students and staff. These units are being funded as part of a $600 million provincial investment over three years, which includes $200 million for the installation of 189 modular classrooms across Alberta for the 2026-2027 school year, creating roughly 5,450 new student spaces in total.
Peace Wapiti Public School Division Board Chair Lori Grant stated that the modular units will help ease the current space pressures while the division continues work on a long-term solution. The province has already provided funding for the design and planning phases of a new replacement school, a project that includes land allocation support from the County of Grande Prairie.
While the new modular units provide an immediate boost to capacity, the division remains focused on the development of the future facility. Further details regarding the installation timeline for the new classrooms have yet to be finalized.
