The County of Wellington will reopen the Elora Waste Facility on March 3, 2026, after completing an eleven-month renovation. The facility, located in the County of Wellington, Ontario, has been closed since April 2025 to undergo major upgrades to its infrastructure and traffic layout. This site is the busiest in the county, previously serving about 1,600 people every week.
According to the County of Wellington Solid Waste Services, the $2.8 million project included the installation of dual scales and a new scale house to help residents move through the site faster. Visitors will also find a larger area for dropping off items, a new building for household hazardous waste, and new paving throughout the property. These changes are intended to shorten the time it takes for people to unload their trash and recycling while making the site safer for drivers.
While the Elora facility was closed for construction, the nearby Belwood Waste Facility stayed open for extra days to help handle the traffic. With the Elora site returning to its normal service, the Belwood location will go back to its regular operating schedule starting March 1, 2026. This means the Belwood site will return to being open only on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Das Soligo, the manager of Solid Waste Services, noted that the new design is meant to stop traffic from backing up, which was a frequent problem before the renovation. The upgrades allow the facility to handle more people at once and improve how hazardous materials are collected. Although the project faced some delays due to design changes, the facility is now ready to serve the growing community.
