Guelph Grand River Conservation Authority Warns of Higher River Flows After Rainfall

Guelph residents should use caution near rivers after the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety on December 18 warning that a storm system will bring above-freezing temperatures and approximately 15 mm of rain, raising flows on the Speed and Eramosa rivers. No significant flooding is expected, but higher-than-normal water levels increase risks in low-lying areas along the riverbanks.

The GRCA warns that rain and melting snow will enter the river system at the same time, creating fast-moving water that can undercut trails and parkland. Reservoirs upstream, including the Guelph Lake Dam, are at their normal operating (winter) levels, providing some buffer capacity as flows move through the watershed.

The City of Guelph’s Public Works and Emergency Management are identified in the GRCA brief as the primary local responders and would be responsible for monitoring infrastructure and public safety during this event. The draft’s specific claims that crews will clear storm drains overnight and that Wellington Street or Edinburgh Road are being specifically monitored were not confirmed in the provided research and should be verified with City officials before publication.

In past winter thaws, low-lying areas such as Silvercreek Park and Royal City Park have seen water spill over grass and walkways. The GRCA advisory urges the public to exercise caution around waterways; authorities may order closures or additional measures if conditions worsen.

Residents and recreational users should avoid riverfront parks and heed warning signs.
