In Guelph, Ontario, police are investigating after a woman in her 70s had her debit and Visa cards compromised in late November 2025, resulting in a $3,500 cash withdrawal and the purchase of two bottles of Chateau Margaux from a south-end LCBO. According to a Guelph Police Service media release on Dec. 30, 2025, the total loss to the victim is about $7,700.

Investigators say the suspect withdrew cash and then bought the luxury Bordeaux wine—priced at roughly $2,100 per bottle—at a south-end LCBO (police did not specify the exact store address). The victim first learned of the fraud when her bank alerted her to unusual transactions on her debit and Visa cards.

The Guelph Police Service has released surveillance images of an unidentified male believed to be involved in the theft. Anyone who recognizes him or has information is asked to contact Constable Layne Beaver at the Guelph Police Service (519-824-1212, ext. 7607) or contact Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.csgw.tips.

Guelph police have previously warned local seniors to guard their cards and PINs, verify unexpected calls or messages from anyone claiming to be a bank investigator, and report suspicious activity to their financial institution immediately. Police continue to warn that fraudsters often target vulnerable residents with high-value scams.
