On March 7, 2026, the Grand River Conservation Authority put Guelph, Ontario, under a flood watch as warm temperatures and rain caused rapid snowmelt across the region.
While Guelph is currently under a watch, the authority upgraded the risk to a full flood warning for the communities of New Hamburg, Ayr, and West Montrose. Officials say that water levels in these areas are reaching critical points where flooding is more likely to occur.
The increased risk comes after temperatures reached double digits on March 7, 2026, combined with 15 to 30 millimetres of rainfall. This weather has caused snow to melt quickly, sending a large amount of water into local rivers and streams.
Major reservoirs in the area, such as the one in Guelph, are currently at normal levels and are being used to hold back water to help protect communities further down the river. The current flood alerts are expected to stay in place until March 11, 2026.
Safety officials are asking everyone to stay far away from riverbanks and water that is still covered in ice because the conditions are unstable and dangerous. Parents should keep children and pets away from all watercourses while the high flows continue.
