The Village of Haines Junction Council in Yukon issued a reminder on January 26, 2026, for all dog owners to renew or purchase their 2026 dog licences. Under the Village’s Animal Control Bylaw, every dog residing within the municipal boundaries must be licensed annually to help ensure public safety and to allow lost animals to be returned to their owners quickly.

Residents can buy the 2026 tags at the Village Office during business hours. The Village Office is open Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except for a lunch closure from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., and is closed on statutory holidays.

Dog tags are $5.00 annually for spayed/neutered dogs and $25.00 for unspayed/unneutered dogs. The Village’s animal control guidelines also include a puppy provision: if an owner buys a tag for a puppy and has the dog spayed or neutered within six months of licensing, a $20.00 rebate on the initial cost is available.

The Consolidated Municipal Fees Bylaw sets the fee schedule that helps fund local animal control and pound services. Village messaging notes that the low cost of a licence is a practical “insurance policy” for pet owners, given the higher fines and impound fees that can apply to unlicensed or at-large animals.

Community safety remains a high priority in the region, particularly regarding pet safety within the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN). Proper licensing helps the bylaw officer manage animal concerns and keep both pets and neighbours safe in areas where dogs might interact with local wildlife.
