The Village of Haines Junction, Yukon, is recruiting for a permanent full‑time Public Works Utility Maintenance Operator (Public Works Utility Maintenance Operator 2) to support operation and maintenance of the community’s water and sewer systems. The posting was active in January 2026 and will close when a suitable candidate is found.

The position’s duties include sampling and testing water quality, assisting with repairs to water and wastewater infrastructure, and operating heavy equipment for the Public Works Department; the role reports to the Public Works Manager and may act as Direct Responsible Charge for water and sewer systems as required.

The recruitment follows a multi‑year, $10‑million infrastructure program announced in 2024 through a joint federal‑territorial investment to rehabilitate the municipality’s underground utilities. Infrastructure Canada and federal/territorial releases say the upgrades included replacing over one kilometre (1,000 metres+) of old water and sewer mains and rehabilitating more than four kilometres of roads and alleys.

For years the village had relied on aging concrete and asbestos‑insulated water and sewer pipes that were reported to be prone to cracking from local seismic activity and ground shifting. The recent works were intended to reduce leaks and service interruptions associated with those older mains.

Mayor Thomas Eckervogt called the investment vital to the community’s long‑term health and sustainability. The Village has also recently updated its bylaws and its 2025 operating and capital budget (Bylaw 423‑25), which provide municipal budgetary authority for operations and maintenance associated with the upgraded infrastructure.
