The Government of Yukon and the University of New Brunswick have opened applications for a training program that helps local nurses in Haines Junction, Yukon, advance their careers without moving away. This “Learn Where You Live” program allows licensed practical nurses to study for their bachelor of nursing degree virtually while they continue to work in their home community.
The program will include up to 20 seats for the territory, with the next round of training set to begin in the fall of 2026. Participants use online classes and virtual reality simulations to learn, alongside hands-on training at local sites like the St. Elias Health Centre.
Tuition costs are shared three ways, with the territorial government paying for one-third of the total. Employers are encouraged to pay another third, while the nursing students pay for the final portion.
This effort aims to help keep health services stable by training medical staff in rural areas like the Kluane region. Successful students are expected to finish their degrees and become registered nurses by the fall of 2029.
Applications for this round of training opened on February 25, 2026. Interested residents can find details and apply through the Government of Yukon website.
