The Champagne and Aishihik First Nations government announced on February 26, 2026, that the scheduled Ice Fishing Day at Kathleen Lake in Haines Junction, Yukon, has been postponed. Originally set for February 28, 2026, the community gathering was meant to run from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm.
Families and anglers who planned to attend are encouraged to check official community channels for a new date and information regarding travel or equipment changes. Kathleen Lake is located within Kluane National Park and Reserve and is known for sudden, intense winds that can make ice conditions unpredictable.
While a new date has not yet been set, the First Nation is currently focusing on community safety meetings held in partnership with Public Safety Canada. These meetings are taking place on February 26 and February 27 at the New Takhini Community Hall to discuss local wellness and crime prevention.
Chief Barb Joe and the local government oversee these community initiatives to support traditional practices and resident safety. Updates on the rescheduled fishing day will be posted on the First Nation website as they become available.
