Mining ministers from the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut met in Haines Junction, Yukon, on March 1, 2026, to find ways to work together on mining. This meeting was held to plan for the growth of the critical minerals industry, which could lead to more local jobs and business opportunities in the community.

The Government of Yukon is changing how it handles mining applications to make the process more predictable and clear. A new group called the Mineral Tenure and Exploration Branch will help manage permits while following through on requirements to talk with First Nations. These changes were made after an independent review looked into the failure of the Eagle Gold Mine in 2024.

A new committee of senior government leaders has also been formed to help make faster decisions on big mining projects. This change could lead to more activity at the Nickel Shaw project located near Haines Junction, which contains large reserves of nickel and copper. If this project grows, residents might see more heavy trucks on the Alaska Highway and Haines Road.

The ministers are asking the federal government for more funding for power lines and roads to support mining across the North. They are also calling for a new tax break to help create more jobs in the exploration sector. Ted Laking, the Yukon Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, led the meeting ahead of a large mining conference in Toronto.
