Residents of Haines Junction, Yukon, are experiencing a stretch of milder daytime weather compared with typical late‑January conditions. According to the Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast issued on Jan. 28, 2026, daytime highs are expected to reach as warm as about −3°C to −5°C in the early part of the week (Jan. 28–29), before returning to colder values later in the week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s historical normals list an average daily maximum of about −11°C for late January, so daytime readings near −3°C represent a notable departure from the seasonal average. There are no active weather alerts for Haines Junction on the Environment Canada site as of the Jan. 28 forecast. Although daytime temperatures are unusually mild, nights remain cold in many cases (with forecast lows around −12°C to −16°C on some nights).

Parks Canada (Kluane National Park and Reserve) advises caution for anyone planning to venture onto lake ice, warning that thin ice and overflow can occur and that the agency does not test ice thickness. Parks Canada specifically covers conditions around Kathleen Lake within the park. Pine Lake, a popular recreational lake near Haines Junction, is a Yukon territorial site (managed by Yukon Government); people should check Yukon Parks or local updates for ice conditions there before skating or ice fishing. Parks Canada’s winter safety guidance also lists minimum ice‑thickness guidance for recreational use.

Drivers should also exercise care on the Alaska Highway and on the Haines Highway (often called the Haines Road locally) as daytime melting followed by overnight refreezing can create slippery, greasy surfaces. 511 Yukon monitors road conditions, cameras and alerts for these routes and is a good source of up‑to‑date travel information for motorists.
