Local health leaders in Hay River, Northwest Territories, met recently to discuss upcoming changes to medical travel and how residents receive daily care. On February 20, 2026, the Public Administrator for the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority held a meeting with regional wellness chairs to review plans for more efficient services and new safety standards.

One of the main topics was a plan to modernize medical travel through the Department of Health and Social Services, with work expected to be finished by late 2026. This review aims to reduce paperwork and make it easier for people to understand how to access travel for treatment when they need to leave the community for specialized care.

Residents have until February 27, 2026, to provide their thoughts on a new national standard for cultural safety and humility. This standard, created by the Health Standards Organization, is being introduced to ensure that all health services are respectful and safe for everyone in the community, particularly Indigenous residents.

A new plan for community health clinics is also set for release by the Government of the Northwest Territories in the spring of 2026. These updates are part of a larger effort to improve how residents visit their doctors and health teams as the local health office works to join the territorial health system.

Dan Florizone, the administrator leading these changes, met with local representatives like Barb Hart to ensure the community has a voice during this transition. A follow-up meeting is planned for the spring of 2026 to continue tracking the progress of these improvements to local health services.
