The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating after unidentified human remains were discovered inside a burned vehicle south of the Eden Valley 216 reserve in Foothills County, Alta., on Feb. 4, 2026. Fire crews from the Foothills, Diamond Valley and High River departments were dispatched at about 9:30 p.m. to a reported grass fire; once the blaze was extinguished, they located the burned vehicle containing the remains.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken carriage of the investigation and is treating the death as suspicious. RCMP said residents in the High River and Eden Valley areas should expect an increased police presence in the coming days, which could include roadblocks, forensic canvassing and officers searching the area.
The identity of the person found in the vehicle has not been released. An autopsy has been scheduled with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary to assist with identification and to determine the manner and cause of death.
RCMP are asking anyone who was travelling in the area south of Eden Valley on the night of Feb. 4, 2026, or who saw any unusual vehicles or activity, to contact their local RCMP detachment with any information.
