According to Environment Canada, while daytime temperatures will hover around -20°C under sunny skies, the overnight and early morning hours will present a significant risk of frostbite, which can occur in minutes. As of Friday afternoon, there were no active weather alerts for the community, as the forecast remains below the -50°C wind chill threshold required to trigger an official Extreme Cold Warning for the Baffin Island region.
Current observations from the Igloolik Airport show that conditions are already harsh, with a recorded wind chill of -35°C on Friday morning. With temperatures expected to remain low throughout the weekend, locals are encouraged to limit time spent outdoors during the coldest periods.
Looking ahead, the community can expect a gradual warming trend as the new week begins. Forecasters anticipate temperatures will rise from -18°C on Monday to -13°C by Thursday, providing a break from the current deep freeze.
