Teachers from Sivuniit Middle School in Igloolik, Nunavut, will join colleagues across the territory in early April 2026 for the Nunavut Teachers’ Association’s Annual Meeting of Central Council, where delegates debate and vote on resolutions that shape classroom standards and member supports. The meeting gives local educators a formal forum to influence how schools are run and which resources are prioritized for students.

The Nunavut Teachers’ Association (NTA) holds the Annual Meeting of Central Council each spring to review and pass bylaw and policy resolutions that guide the association’s work. The timing follows a new collective agreement ratified in 2025 that provides a 15% wage increase over three years — 9% effective July 1, 2025, then 3% on July 1, 2026, and 3% on July 1, 2027 — allowing members to shift focus from salary negotiations to non-monetary issues.

In Igloolik, educators have long raised concerns about aging infrastructure and maintenance problems in the community’s schools. For example, separate reporting has identified 127 issues at Ataguttaaluk Elementary School, and Sivuniit Middle School itself was closed briefly after a fuel spill discovered during the 2022–23 winter break. Teachers also say a shortage of available housing in the community is a major barrier to recruiting and retaining staff.

To provide more support for members, the NTA appointed Natasha Simonee as Inuit Member Support Coordinator; she began providing member services in Inuktitut and English on Jan. 5, 2026. Her role is intended to help Inuit educators navigate workplace challenges and to support members as the territory implements its Inuktut-first curriculum, which NTA delegates are expected to discuss during this year’s meeting.

The resolutions passed in April will form part of the NTA’s advocacy agenda and can be used to press the Government of Nunavut and local authorities for faster action on repairs, classroom resources and other measures intended to create a more stable learning environment for students in the coming years.
