The Qikiqtani Inuit Association is building nine new affordable homes in Igloolik, Nunavut, to help local families find a place to live. Construction is set to begin in 2026, and the project is expected to be finished by 2028.

The new buildings are part of a territory-wide housing strategy called Angirratsaliulauqta. Funding for the homes was secured through the 2022 federal budget, which set aside $845 million for Inuit regions, and an extra $18 million from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

As of March 18, 2026, the association is already building 21 other homes in Grise Fiord, Pond Inlet, Clyde River, and Arctic Bay. Those houses in the High Arctic region are on track to be completed by the summer of 2026, while the Igloolik units will focus on providing more options for working families.

When the homes in Igloolik are ready, they will be handed over to the Igluvut Corporation to be operated and maintained. This group was set up in October 2025 by Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated specifically to manage affordable housing for Inuit residents.

Olayuk Akesuk, the president of the association, said he is proud to provide solutions to the housing shortage. He explained that organizations must work together because the government cannot solve the housing crisis on its own and that partnerships are necessary for the well-being of local communities.
