A bright new chapter for local child care began in Innisfail on August 4, 2026, as the Innisfail Kids Academy officially opened its doors at the Eastgate Centre, drawing Town Council members to a celebratory ribbon-cutting even though their regular meeting had been cancelled for the summer.
The facility, located at Unit 6-11, 4804 42 Ave in the Eastgate shopping centre, offers programs from infants through kindergarten. The opening gives parents a fresh option in a town where finding quality child care has often meant long waiting lists.
Mayor Jean Barclay and Councillors Donnie Hill, Shawn Russell, Chris Strong, Janice Wing, Lyle McKellar, and Jason Heistad were among those welcoming the new business. A Town of Innisfail Facebook post described the day as a positive community milestone.
The timing is notable given recent shifts in Alberta’s child care scene. In April 2025, a flat monthly fee of $326.25 per child (about $15 per day) took effect under a federal-provincial agreement, but news reports from May 2025 revealed that several for-profit operators were being denied access to that funding. The academy’s successful launch suggests it found a path through those challenges.
Council’s presence at the Eastgate ceremony came on a day when its regular Agenda and Priorities Meeting had been scrubbed as part of a lighter summer schedule — a signal that members saw the opening as worth stepping out for. The ribbon cutting also brought a moment of good news amid other town matters, including a recent $50,073.90 GST reassessment tied to the nearly $15-million modernization of the Innisfail Aquatic Centre.
