Residents in Kapuskasing, Ontario, are facing dangerously cold weather this Monday, January 26, 2026, as wind chills are expected to hit −40°C. Environment Canada has issued a cold-weather (Yellow) warning for the Kapuskasing–Hearst–Smooth Rock Falls corridor, noting the worst of the freeze will occur during the morning commute and school-bus runs. The extreme cold is expected to last through the morning, making it difficult for vehicles to start and creating serious risks for anyone outdoors.

The cold is hazardous because exposed skin can freeze in as little as five to ten minutes at these wind-chill values. Health Canada’s wind-chill guidance and Environment Canada’s warning say these conditions create a high risk of frostbite for students waiting at bus stops and people walking to work. Environment Canada advises dressing in layers, covering all exposed skin and limiting time outdoors.

The North East Tri-Board Student Transportation (NEoBUS / North East Tri-Board Student Transportation) is monitoring conditions to decide whether school buses will run. According to local transportation protocols, a final ‘go/no-go’ decision is typically made early on the morning of service (commonly by about 6:00 a.m.). Families should check NEoBUS announcements, their school board’s communications and local media for the latest updates before heading to bus stops.

The Town of Kapuskasing has been listed among local stakeholders responding to the event; residents are advised to check municipal channels for information on warming centres and supports. Environment Canada also recommends keeping emergency supplies in vehicles — such as extra blankets and jumper cables — and warns that driving can be hazardous in these conditions. The cold is expected to remain a concern until temperatures and winds moderate later in the day.
