Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) lifted the Yellow Cold Warning for Kearney, Ont., on Jan. 26, 2026, ending a 48‑hour alert that began on Jan. 24.
Although no alert is currently in effect, ECCC’s forecast still shows overnight lows near −20°C and gusty winds, which can make temperatures feel colder and raise the risk of frostbite for people spending time outdoors.
Drivers should still take care on Highways 518 and 11 and check Ontario 511 (the Ministry of Transportation’s road‑conditions service) for the latest travel information, since blowing snow and reduced visibility are possible. Gusty winds can also create drifting snow on Sand Lake and Hassard Lake, obscuring pressure cracks and other hazards that are dangerous for snowmobilers.
Health Canada and local public‑health guidance advise checking on vulnerable neighbours and limiting time outdoors during bitter cold. Public‑health guidance also warns that low wind chills can make frostbite occur quickly even when an official weather warning has been lifted.
