Warmer temperatures in Kearney, Ontario, have softened the packed snow on local trails, prompting officials to warn riders about potential trail damage on February 13, 2026. This weather change follows a weekend of heavy use during recent community events.

The Highland Rovers Snowmobile Club, which looks after 112 kilometres of trails in the Kearney area, is monitoring the conditions. The softer snow arrived shortly after the Kearney Dog Sled Races concluded on February 8, 2026.

Trail managers from the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs note that riding on soft trails can cause deep ruts and damage the base of the path. This damage can be difficult to fix even when the weather turns cold again.

Many visitors come to the area to reach the Ice Caves on Trail AL301, located about 18 kilometres east of Sand Lake. Riders are encouraged to check for updates on grooming and closures before heading out to ensure the trails remain safe and usable for the rest of the season.
