The Government of Prince Edward Island issued a winter safety advisory on February 9, 2026, aimed at helping older residents in Kensington, Prince County, avoid slipping on ice and other winter hazards. The guidance, developed in collaboration with Island EMS, is intended to reduce the number of people admitted to hospital with serious injuries from winter weather.
Darby McCormick, an Advanced Care Paramedic with Island EMS, contributed frontline tips to the guidance based on years of responding to emergency calls. The guide recommends practical steps such as wearing appropriate footwear, improving outdoor and porch lighting, and using a ‘penguin-style’ walk (short, shuffling steps with slightly bent knees) when crossing icy patches.
Health officials say the goal is to prevent falls before they happen and ease pressure on emergency departments. Residents can also consider financial supports and home-modification programs such as the Seniors Safe @ Home Program to make houses safer through the winter months.
Local community groups and the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation are expected to help distribute the safety information at seniors’ centres and clinics across Kensington, encouraging neighbours to check walkways and assist with snow clearing to keep everyone safe.
