The Government of Prince Edward Island put annual spring weight limits in place for roads in Kensington and across the province starting at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026. These rules are meant to protect local streets while the ground thaws and the road surfaces are more likely to be damaged by heavy traffic.
Heavy trucks, transport companies, and construction suppliers must now reduce their maximum loads to 75 per cent of their usual weight. According to Prince Edward Island Oversize / Overweight Regulations, these restrictions apply to all roads that are not specifically built to handle heavy weights in all types of weather.
The province uses these limits every year because the ground underneath the pavement becomes soft as ice and frost melt during the spring. During this time, the weight of a full truck can cause deep cracks or break the road surface, leading to expensive repairs later in the year.
Local businesses in Kensington that move heavy materials like gravel or shipping containers will need to carry smaller loads until the ground dries out. This change helps keep the community’s roads in good condition and prevents major damage to the local transportation network.
These restrictions will stay in effect until the province determines that the roadbeds have stabilized and are strong enough to carry full loads again. Officials use these measures as a way to avoid the high cost of rebuilding roads that fail during the wet spring season.
