Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Kingston, Odessa, and the Frontenac Islands, warning residents of brief but intense snowfall that could affect travel conditions throughout this morning, April 7, 2026.
The snowfall began overnight and is expected to continue into early this afternoon, particularly for areas near the St. Lawrence River. Residents can expect between 4 and 8 cm of accumulation, with gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h creating blowing snow. This weather may result in significantly reduced visibility and impact the morning commute.
While this amount of snow is slightly higher than the average of 3.2 cm typically seen in April, it remains within normal spring variability for the region. Kingston is often susceptible to these localized snow events, known as lake-effect snow, which occur when cold air passes over the relatively warmer waters of the Great Lakes.
Conditions are expected to improve as the snow clears near noon. However, temperatures will drop tonight to a low of minus 7, with a wind chill near minus 10. A significant warming trend is on the way for the rest of the week, with temperatures forecast to climb toward 17 degrees by Monday.
