Residents in Kingston, Ontario, should prepare for icy roads and sidewalks starting tonight as several winter weather systems move through the region. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a forecast on February 16, 2026, warning of freezing drizzle overnight and patches of fog. These conditions can create a thin layer of ice that is often difficult to see on the ground.

The icy weather is expected to continue mid-week with freezing rain or snow forecast for Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Temperatures are expected to stay around zero, which is the point where ice most often causes problems for power lines and travel. Another system on Friday, February 20, 2026, brings a 70 per cent chance of more snow or rain.

Local crews are getting ready to manage the 1,800 kilometres of road lanes across the area. The City of Kingston uses 37 road plows to keep streets clear and prioritizes the busiest routes first. Drivers are encouraged to give themselves extra time for their morning commutes.

Parents and students should also watch for changes to school bus schedules this week. Information from the Limestone District School Board notes that the local busing authority, Tri-Board Student Transportation Services, will cancel buses for the entire day if bad weather is expected to impact any part of the trip.

If ice causes tree branches to fall and break power lines, Utilities Kingston runs a 24-hour emergency line at 613-546-1181. Residents should be careful on walkways and side streets that have not been treated with salt, as they may be much more slippery than they look.
