The Alzheimer Society of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Counties is hosting its annual walk to raise funds and awareness for local families living with dementia. The Kingston event will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at MacDonald Park from 1-3pm.
The walk is part of the national IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, which is recognized as the largest dementia fundraiser in Canada. A concurrent event will also be held in Napanee at the John Parrott Centre on the same day from 9-11am.
According to Vicki Poffley, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society, the need for community support is greater than ever. The organization currently provides services to more than 4,500 people living with dementia in the region, along with their caregivers and families. Poffley noted that recent years have highlighted significant challenges regarding dementia care and the well-being of seniors aging at home.
Nationally, the initiative has a strong track record of support. Since 2015, the walk has generated more than $50 million for dementia programs. In 2025 alone, participants across the country raised over $7.2 million. This funding is critical, as recent estimates suggest that family and friends across Canada spend more than $7.3 billion annually to support loved ones living with the condition.
With an estimated 771,939 people living with dementia across Canada as of early 2025, and more than 414 new cases diagnosed every day, organizers are emphasizing the importance of community participation. The event at MacDonald Memorial Park, located along the waterfront at 9 King St. E., offers an opportunity for residents to contribute to these essential local services.
