Residents in Lacombe, Alberta, are being warned to prepare for a period of snow followed by a sharp drop in temperatures starting on February 16, 2026. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, snow is expected to begin on the night of February 16, leading into a significant cold snap. Daytime highs are expected to reach only -15C on February 17, with overnight lows dropping to -21C.
These temperatures are much lower than what the community usually sees this time of year, as the normal high is -3C and the normal low is -15C. Alberta Health Services notes that when it gets colder than -15C, the risk of frostbite on exposed skin increases significantly. In these conditions, skin damage can occur in just a few minutes if there is a wind chill present.
The City of Lacombe plans to manage the snowfall using a priority system for its road crews to keep traffic moving. Busy main roads are cleared first, followed by emergency routes like Wolf Creek Drive, before crews move into residential neighbourhoods. This system is designed to ensure that emergency vehicles and the busiest streets are safe to use as quickly as possible.
Local officials are encouraging residents to check on their home pipes and outdoor animals to prevent damage or injury during the deep freeze. Travel is expected to become difficult because the combination of fresh snow and freezing temperatures can make road surfaces very slippery. Drivers are urged to take extra care and be aware of city crews working to clear the streets throughout the week.
