The Government of Alberta is accepting nominations for the 2026 Minister’s Seniors Service Awards, a provincewide program that recognizes individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations who make a positive difference in the lives of older Albertans. The ministry is making a targeted push for nominations from Central Alberta, including the City of Lacombe.
Residents have until April 30, 2026, to submit nominations for local helpers who provide essential care, such as help with daily chores or social visits. The province is especially encouraging nominees who have worked to reduce social isolation and helped seniors cope with the rising cost of living.
One of the award categories is the Alice Modin Award, presented to an individual or couple aged 65 or older who has volunteered in their community for 20 or more years and shown exceptional commitment. The award honours Alice Modin, who more than 30 years ago campaigned for a Seniors’ Day in Strathcona County and helped pave the way for the provincewide Seniors’ Week that is celebrated today.
Locally, Lacombe & District FCSS connects seniors with programs such as home support and visitation services. Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, said: “Seniors across our province deserve to live vibrant lives with dignity and respect. We want to acknowledge the local heroes and helpers who dedicate their time and energy to support seniors.”
Nominations can be submitted online through the province’s Minister’s Seniors Service Awards page or by downloading the nomination booklet from Open Government and emailing or mailing it to the ministry in Edmonton. Winners are expected to be celebrated at an awards ceremony in October 2026.
