Lacombe Residents Face Slippery Roads After Windy Night

Residents in Lacombe, Alberta, should prepare for slippery roads and gusty winds late Friday night into early Saturday morning, January 30–31, 2026. A rapid weather transition is expected, with wind gusts up to 50 kilometres per hour and an overnight temperature drop that could turn wet streets to ice.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a high near +5°C on Friday with a 40 percent chance of showers overnight. As the airflow shifts from the southeast to the northwest late Friday night into Saturday morning, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing — a setup that can produce a rapid “flash freeze,” turning standing water and melting snow into black ice and making the Saturday morning commute hazardous.

City of Lacombe public works crews say they are prepared to treat priority routes — including Highway 2A and 50th Avenue — with abrasives and de-icing materials as conditions require.

FortisAlberta is monitoring the electricity network for localized outages that can occur when ice-laden branches contact lines during gusty, icing conditions. Motorists planning to use the QEII/Highway 2 corridor between Red Deer and Ponoka should be extra cautious: that stretch is known for sudden icy patches and strong crosswinds. The province’s 511 Alberta service has real-time road-condition maps and camera views for travellers, and local policing agencies (Lacombe Police Service and Blackfalds RCMP) are monitoring for increased collision risk and advise drivers to slow down and leave extra space when wet-looking surfaces may be frozen.
